Please sign the “Stop Destroying Videogames” EU Citizens Initiative
We have just passed Black Friday, and today is Cyber Monday, so publishers and marketplaces may offer discounts on tech-related devices or entertainment media.
Whether you are a casual gamer on your phone, tablet, PC, or portable device or a professional gamer competing in an e-sports tournament, video games have left a mark on you.
You play them on your preferred platform, and you surely experience frustration when one of your (paid) or free-to-play games (where you have spent money later) is removed from your libraries or devices.
Please sign the EU Initiative to force game publishers by law not to drop your games from your libraries after you have paid for them, only because they decide to drop them from their systems.
You have paid for it. You have the right to enjoy it.
You deserve to “own” the game you have paid for and play it, even if it’s 10 years later, because of some nostalgia.
This initiative calls for publishers that sell or license videogames to consumers in the European Union (or related features and assets sold for videogames they operate) to leave them in a functional (playable) state.
Specifically, the initiative seeks to prevent publishers from remotely disabling video games before providing reasonable means to continue functioning said video games without the publisher's involvement.
The initiative does not seek ownership of the videogames, associated intellectual rights, or monetization rights. It does not expect the publisher to provide resources for the videogame once it is discontinued while leaving it in a reasonably functional (playable) state.
